Ian is a partner in the social housing team and specialises in site acquisition/development and finance/security work in the housing sector.

He acts for RSLs on acquisitions of development land as social housing for rent and sale (including schemes requiring permanent affordability) from local authorities and private owners. He has dealt with the acquisition of several large portfolios of properties for RSLs from other RSLs and Housing Action Trusts, and the “trickle transfer” of around 150 properties from a local authority over a two year period to be refurbished for rent by an RSL.

Ian also advised five RSLs in relation to a pioneering savings and loan scheme in the North East, and another on its zone agency agreement with the Housing Corporation.

Ian advises the CLT movement nationally on appropriate methods of sale with a view to creating permanent affordability where possible.  He is a member of the CLT working group negotiating with the Council of Mortgage Lenders and Building Societies to find methods of sale which those bodies will recommend to their members for lending purposes. He is also a regular speaker at CLT seminars and conferences and has spoken at the last two National Community Land Trust Conferences.

Ian is a leading individual in the North East in the Chambers Guide to the Legal Profession.
