Local Growth and Planning

The Government are proposing a number of changes to the planning system, designed to shift power to local communities and give greater incentives for local growth. The revocation of the Regional Spatial Strategies has thrown the planning world into some confusion and we now wait to see how the gaps created by the loss of regional planning policy will be filled.

The Conservatives are proposing a new National Planning Framework setting out national planning policies with a much reduced number of simplified guidance notes setting out minimum standards for development. Beyond that, they propose that plans should be devised at a local level and that local neighbourhoods should be encouraged to prepare their own neighbourhood plans within those local plan frameworks. Funding will be made available to assist with neighbourhoods to enable them to do this.
