The Employment Act 2002 received Royal Assent on 8 July 2002. Regulations made pursuant within the Act will come into force in April 2003.
The main aim of the legislation is to help parents to devote more time to their children in early life by balancing support for working parents against a reduction in red tape for employers.
Some provisions of the Act are as follows:-
Maternity leave
- Increased entitlement to 6 months paid, and a further 6 months unpaid maternity leave.
- Increased standard rate of statutory maternity pay and maternity allowance from £75.00 - £100.
